Founder, Chairman, CEO and President Dr. Nicholas Lorenzo recently sat down with Authority Magazine for an in-depth Q&A highlighting the origins that inspired his life's work — and the positive impact it's since made on patients, labs and healthcare professionals around the world.

In the article, Dr. Lorenzo provided an inside look into his upbringing, education, mentorship and leadership path that shaped his mission to strengthen public health through better sampling.

Persistence, resilience and curiosity remained central themes, from defying physician norms as he stepped into entrepreneurship — and founding the first-ever online healthcare database soon after — to leveraging setbacks as learning opportunities in every startup.

Dr. Lorenzo's decades of executive leadership and innovation eventually led him to MicroWash, a nasal lavage specimen collection device that provides a comfortable patient experience and high-sensitivity specimens for respiratory testing. He and his expert team believe this solution has potential to redefine diagnostic preparedness as an ideal alternative to nasal swabs.

"Instead of reacting to outbreaks, we can be proactive in containing whatever seasonal or novel virus comes our way next," he said. "And, in a way, MicroWash rebuilds trust in diagnostic testing by simply making it something people don't dread. That alone can transform global health outcomes."

Dr. Lorenzo is a seasoned medical executive with more than 30 years of experience in neurology, healthcare management and entrepreneurship. Along with serving as founder and CEO of MicroWash, parent company University Medical Devices and national consulting firm PHLT Consulting, he has founded and scaled multiple health-tech startups that have been acquired by notable industry leaders including McGraw Hill, WebMD/Medscape and Walmart Health.
